Raining Season Where to Surf in Bali

The Best Surf Spots in Bali When the Rainy Season

Although the rainy season indicates that there will be rain, many visitors will be surprised at how much sunlight the rainy season might have. Rain patterns in Bali are similar to most tropical locations throughout the world. For several hours every day during the rainy season, rain and cats will fall, and the sun will shine again in the sky. In addition, the rainy season brings many benefits that travelers may not even think about. For starters, during the rainy season thin crowds, including in the ranks. So, if you want to avoid the typical tourist packages, the rainy season is your best choice. In addition to fewer people, the rainy season also lowers temperatures. Although Bali is always warm, rain does make the island a little cooler and a bit more comfortable. And finally, all the rain brings the best natural wonders in Bali. During the rainy season, Bali is green, lush and full of dense and exotic forests.

Now, what about the waves that you ask about? What is the best surfing spot in Bali in the rainy season? During the rainy season, the wind direction changes from east to west, resulting in many islands on the west coast breaking. The quality of the waves, of course, depends entirely on the direction and strength of the wind. Terrestrial winds can actually damage large waves by cutting, while offshore winds will slow down and pierce waves. Don't be afraid, the wet season wakes up a lot of Bali surfing breaks that will make you surf and be satisfied at the end of your trip.

Surf Spots in the Rainy Season That You Must Know

  • Green Bowl

Green Bowl, a south-facing surfing spot with a unique history, ranks top on the list of waves of the rainy season in Bali. The journey to catch your first wave at the Green Bowl is a difficult one. Rest is located under a towering cliff and surfers have to go down hundreds of stone steps to paddle out. The Green Bowl was formerly known as the "Green Ball" and was called the "secret place" for local residents of Bali during the rainy season. The place remained relatively congested when Bali grew into an international travel destination until a resort was built on a clifftop that had an elevator attached to the beach.

The resort has been closed, and the lift to the beach with it, and the Green Bowl has returned to a more remote state. The wave itself is a fast, strong hander that rolls over rocks and walls well. Just be advised that Green Bowl has one of the strongest rip currents in Bali which makes it difficult to stay in position. The waves are best in the morning before the wind begins to rise. Strong rip currents, exposure to trade winds, and sharp reefs make the Green Bowl a wave of medium and advanced surfers.
  • Keramas Swell
Rice paddies give way to black sand, which in turn gives way to the Keramas, a new World Tour stop and barreling right-hander that will give any traveling surfer the thrill of a lifetime. The wave was once surfed only by locals and those who knew of the wave’s barreling potential, but as is the story with all things in life, that didn’t last. The secret is out on Keramas and it is now becoming one of the most popular waves in all of Bali.

The wave appeals to experts and pros because of its deep barrel section, steep drops, and powerful face that often can bowl before it closes out, making it perfect for large maneuvers and even airs. The wave breaks over sharp lava reef, so it is no place for beginners. Pro surfers frequent the lineup, making the break even more of an expert only wave. The wave works best during a direct south swell during mid-morning when winds tend to be offshore.

  • Sri Lanka Beach
No, we’re not confused, we don’t mean the small teardrop-shaped country that sits below India in the warm, tropical Indian Ocean. On the east coast of Bali, Sri Lanka is another stellar rainy season surf break. Located near the before mentioned swell magnet, Nusa Dua, Sri Lanka is at its best when the swell is large enough to max out Nusa Dua. During the right swell, the wave is a fast-breaking, barreling right that will leave you in awe. The wave breaks over sharp reef. For the best rides, take off late and grab rail.

  • Serangan Beach

Serangan Island often referred to as turtle island for the number of sea turtle nest on the beaches, is located on Bali’s east coast. Like many breaks on this list, and in Bali, the wave at Serangan was once a secret, but now the beans have spilled. The wave does draw a crowd because it is one of the most reliable breaks during the rainy season and always seems to have a wave regardless of the tide.

The wave a lot to offer. The A-frame peaks provide lefts and rights that break over a coral reef. There are three main peaks, each with a varying degree of difficulty. But, because of the reef seabed, this wave is an intermediate and advanced break. This wave and Serangan island where once open to the public, however last year the hotel development on Serangan close the beach access and access to the Serangan surf spots is via boat access.

Kuta Reef Blessed by Great Swells for Surfers

The Challenge of Swells on Kuta Reef, You Must Try

Kuta is located just north of the Bukit Peninsula bottleneck on the west side of Bali. Once a quiet fishing village, Kuta was one of the first cities in Indonesia to be significantly affected by tourism. At present, Kuta is a busy tourist destination for travelers around the world. Kuta Reef is one of the numbers of resting places in the area around Kuta including the airport reef and if you are willing to take a Canggu trip. Kuta Airport makes this easy for your first session in Bali and rests well in conditions ranging from 3 feet to double overhead. Because of its proximity to such a busy tourist destination, Kuta reefs consistently tend to be one of the busier waves in Bali so if this is your first session, don't be discouraged.

Kuta Reef can break in 50 to 200-meter walled-up bowls ripe for maneuvers and a few barrels. Before surfers began pushing south into the Bukit peninsula, Kuta reef was considered one of the better breaks for big dry season swells.  It tends to pick up a bit more swell than airport reefs and the beach breaks in the area. A fun and accessible wave, crowds are a mix of traveling surfers, foreigners, locals, and unfortunately, the occasional beginner being pushed into a wave. Considering crowds are typically an issue, bring your patience to the line-up and consider praying for serenity.  On the bigger days, you can get caught high and dry between take-off and your bottom turn so if you’re the beginner mentioned above know your limits and stick to the Beach. One other note: it’s easy to get ambitious and move to close to the first peak where the wave isn’t makeable. Locals better versed in the local geography will drop in on your every time so chill out and wait your turn in the line-up.

Kuta Reef is Crowded by Surfers

Because the central location of Kuta Reefs can be very crowded, sometimes up to 60 surfers in the water. But, there are all different types of surfers, so there are always a few waves to be had. Kuta Reef, when the conditions are right is a world-class lefthander! With waves that subside up to 200 meters and some nice hollow barrel sections too. This surfing spot offers incredible lefthanders that adorn, peak, and rumble along the road to approach. If you want to get out safely and comfortably, you only need to hire a local canoe driver. There are two takeoff points there. Strong southeast trade winds blow this place up and along with the low tide, the inside is not easy to make. The best time is in the middle or high tide, ensuring you to handle up to six feet or even double.

Kuta Reef feels uncomfortable because of the busy waves. You have to compete with other wave riders who live near the Kuta area to get maximum surfing time. At that time, they were trying to challenge the biggest Kuta area, as a way to increase their surfing improvement. As they proceed further to the south side of Kuta, they will see two other surfing sites called the Airport right and Airport Lefts. Because the central location of Kuta Reefs can be very crowded, sometimes up to 60 surfers in the water. But, there are all different types of surfers, so there are always a few waves to be had.
