Tips to Avoid Shoulder Injuries While Surfing

Shoulder Injuries When Surfing are Often, But You Must Recognize the Prevention

The shoulder consists of a collection of several joints joined by tendons and muscles to allow us to do various movements of the arm - from scratching your back to throwing an object. Shoulders also make us able to paddle or padle when swimming or surfing. For a surfer, the shoulder is a very important part of the body. Surely whoever surfers must be very sorry when his shoulder suffered an injury caused by sprains or too ambitious when surfing sessions. Sometimes, the movements that we do accidentally cause instability in the soft tissue or bone structure in the shoulder. This is what causes our shoulders to feel pain, sometimes the pain is felt temporarily or for a long time that requires medical help to cure it. The shoulder is composed of three bones: upper arm bone (humerus), shoulder blade (scapula) and neck bone (clavicle).

The upper part of the upper arm bone is in the round hole found in the scapula. This hole is called a glenoid. Muscles and tendons work together to maintain the arm bones in this hole. The upper part of the upper arm fits into the veiled joint in the shoulder blade. This joint is called glenoid. The combination of muscles and tendons keeps the arm bones centered in the shoulder joint. This group of muscles and tendons is called a rotator cuff. The rotator cuff covers the upper part of the upper arm bone and is attached to the scapula bone. The rotator cuff consists of four muscles and tendons (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis and teres minor) located between the upper legan bone and the scapula. These muscle and tendon groups allow movement in the shoulder and function to support the joints that connect the upper arms and shoulders. Injuries that can occur in the rotator cuff are damage to muscles and tendons.

If You Have a Shoulder Injury, Try to Do the Following Main Treatments:

- Rest - In the acute phase, the doctor will recommend resting and limiting excessive activities. Try to take a break from surfing. The use of a shoulder sling for several days can also help the healing process.
- Modification of activities. Avoid activities that cause pain in the shoulder such as lifting heavy objects, and forcing the shoulder to work.
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Drugs such as Arcoxia and naproxen can reduce pain and swelling.
- Physiotherapy, strengthening exercises and physical therapy. Specific exercises will restore the ability to move the shoulder and strengthen the shoulder. This exercise program includes stretching movements to increase flexibility. Strengthening the muscles will add support to the shoulder thereby reducing pain and avoiding further injury.
- Steroid injection. Local anesthetic injection and cortisone can reduce pain if the pain does not decrease with rest, medication and physical therapy. Cortisone is a very effective anti-inflammatory drug. In some cases, injection of Platelet Rich Plasma may also be needed.

How to prevent Getting Hit by a Shoulder Injury.

- Get used to warm up before surfing, at least 10 minutes. Train your shoulders by turning your arms in front and back.
- Always calculate and think about everything you will do. So the brain gives a message to your shoulder and it makes your shoulder stronger and not attacked by a sprain.
- If you routinely do surfing and some other heavy things, try also to do a reflexology routine for your shoulders and also some other risk-injured spots.
 - Eat healthy foods that strengthen the joints in your body.
- Enough sleep
- Compress with ice cube immediately if you feel symptoms of pain in your shoulder.
